Early on a cool summer morning, the insects are not too lively. These guys were apparently snoozing with their heads in their favorite meal. I suppose this is as close as they'll get to breakfast in bed.
An abundance of spring wildflowers near Bastrop, Texas. One of those fields that you drive past and say, "Whoa, I need to go back there!"
Windmill in Pontotoc, Texas
Blue columbine near Tincup Pass, Colorado in early July
Cattle trails along the side of Ranch Road 152, near Mason, TX. Shot this on my April 2010 Texas wildflower trip, with my Dad and brother along for the ride. There was a decent breeze this morning, and there was no way all those buttercups were going to hold still for a nice long exposure at f/45 to get everything sharp. So I decided to get just the tops of the flowers in focus with a little front lens tilt on the 4x5, and shot it at f/11 instead! I actually rather like the effect, with the flowers in focus all the way from front to back but a little blur in the tops of the mesquite trees.
Enchanted Rock and bluebonnets, Texas, April 2010. A great morning for shooting the flowers at sunrise, nice and calm with the sun peeking through some patchy clouds. It's a great study in contrast to see the bluebonnets thriving amidst the prickly pear in this arid environment.
Poppies of spring line the doubletrack at sunset in Montana de Oro State Park, California. My father-in-law and I found this spot earlier in the day. As luck would have it, a thunderstorm rolled through perhaps 30 minutes before (providing the bright clouds at upper right). The wind was blowing like crazy, so in the original photo, there was a good deal of blurring. It's a fine photo, but in the name of artistry and fun, I ran some Photoshop painting filters on it until I had an effect I liked.
Thunderstorm and poppies at sunset, in Montana de Oro State Park, California. It was really windy when I took this shot, making for a bit of an exposure challenge. Luckily (?) my D200 was in the shop so I borrowed my friend's D300 (which does much better at ISO 1600). I also like this image after running it through a Photoshop watercolor filter, too; both images are in this gallery.
A wildflower at Vedauwoo, Wyoming. The top petal was missing before I shot it, I promise!
