Scout Lake, Colorado, early October 2009. Apparently, this is the 5th largest beaver pond in Colorado. As I camped out here the night before, I was awakened every so often by a loud "thwack" of a beaver tail on the water. By morning, the temperature was just 5F and most of the pond had frozen. No more thwacking.

Sunset on Mount Rainier, shot from trailside above Sunrise (on the mountain's northeast side). This was the shot that convinced me that it's probably best to catch The Mountain just before sunrise or after sunset--it's so bright that it's really tough to capture well in the direct light of daytime, and of course a glowing pink sky makes for excellent light.
